Cambodia also happened to fall in the Indochina union.
Cambodia became associated with France in 1867 when the King of Cambodia made a formal request to have a protectorate created for his country. Previously, the present-day Thailand gave up their control over Cambodia, which prompted the need for a French protectorate.
During WWII, post Japanese invasion of the French colonies, the Japanese government allowed for the French to continue their reign with the Japanese supervision of the region. In 1946, Cambodia gained the self-ruling privilege from the French government.
