FISHNETSTOCKINGS situates itself in a mermaid history that tracks back to Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid (1837). This is not the first mermaid story by any measure, but is it is the ur-text of contemporary Western print mermaid literature. Disney’s 1989 animated film, The Little Mermaid (dirs. John Musker and Ron Clements) introduced Andersen’s mermaid (with a new, happy ending) to a new century. Arguably the most widely known and influential mermaid tale, The Little Mermaid is the ur-text for mermaid remixes, including the digital work that invites our collaborative interpretations.
