What is assessment? Why is it important?

In any academic environment, assessment is a vital way to identify long-term student development and weigh the execution of necessary, learned skills. Yet, as the Albert Einstein quote suggests, the layers of assessment are not always as apparent as one would desire. In any medium, they often involve measuring critical content as well as rhetorical and increasingly aesthetic choices. This is particularly true with regards to multimodal projects whose immediate (albeit desired), polished appearance can complicate the way in which we evaluate critical thinking. That is, at first glance, their appearance may mask conceptual issues. Review of Scalar projects should strike a balance between evaluating design choices and assessing the development of the written content.
