Assessment vs. Evaluation

One way to confront this problem of fragmented critical review is by combining the premises of assessment and evaluation—terms often synonymously used, yet quite different in meaning and intention. Assessment considers evidence of learning progress—a learner’s development—while evaluation often considers the broader, summative experiences of a larger project. As the diagram simplistically suggests, assessment is ongoing, privileging feedback, while evaluation provides closure, often through closed-judgment. Our team has noted the value of merging these two aims when grading student Scalar projects.
