Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

12017-05-09T12:14:48-07:00Grade Sheets5Grading Content and Designplain2017-05-11T00:29:13-07:00Grade Sheets are a way to highlight the elements of the rubric and combine this evaluation with the conceptual feedback of Hypothes.is. As in the sample below, review is divided into two categories: Design and Content. The Design section includes many of the metrics associated with creating a Scalar book, including delineating multimodal elements, annotations, and bibliographic information. The Content section assesses the important development of ideas and argument in the written sections. The appeal of Scalar as a platform is the ability to develop an argument and engage with evidence in creative and dynamic ways. This development occurs both in the small-scale pages as well as in the larger book, particularly by employing the connectivity of Scalar’s paths. Ideally, a grade sheet should evaluate both of these elements.
Students use of the multimodal elements is where these two elements of design and content often overlap. The placement of the images and videos is imperative to the design of pages, but the author’s ability to employ these images as evidence in his/her prose is also a crucial critical skill.
