Bringing the Holy Land Home: The Crusades, Chertsey Abbey, and the Reconstruction of a Medieval Masterpiece

When was this made?

This bowl was said to be produced in the thirteenth-fourteenth Century, during the beginning of the end of the Byzantine Empire. The Byzantine Empire of this time period continued to face immense pressure from the Sejuk Turks on the Eastern front of the Empire. The Seljuk Turks were a tribe of Sunni Muslims that were the first Muslim group to solidify and become a political power. The Seljuk Turks began occupying most of the territory east of the Byzantine empire, including Persia, Baghdad, and Turkey.

Though a main target of the Crusades, the Seljuk Turks remained steadfast in their occupation of the region and would eventually be enveloped by the Ottoman Empire. Through social and political stability, the Seljuk tribe was able to revitalize Sunni Islam through a re-centering of patronization of intellectual culture and arts during the 13th century.
