This bowl was produced in the thirteenth or fourteenth century, toward the end of the Byzantine Empire. The Byzantine Empire during this time continued to face immense pressure from the Seljuq Turks on the eastern front of the Empire. The Seljuq Turks were Sunni Muslims who were occupying most of the territory east of the Byzantine empire, including Persia, Baghdad, and Turkey.
Though a main target of the Crusades, the Seljuq Turks remained steadfast in their occupation of the region. Through social and political stability, the Seljuqs revitalized Sunni Islam during the thirteenth century.
