I completed a number of portfolios in my undergraduate career. They used reams of paper and had to be stored in giant three-ring binders. They were heavy and unwieldy.
As part of my Master's coursework, I was required to create a teaching portfolio. Remembering the weight of my earlier portfolios, I chose to create an electronic portfolio. The content of the portfolio required me to reflect on my teaching practice. In putting it together, I also learned some HTML by searching the Internet whenever I needed to learn a new piece of coding. The end product was a portfolio easily carried to the interview for my second teaching position.
Learning how to use different technologies should be embedded in authentic tasks. When the product matters, even basic skills become worth learning.
