Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

The Day After Tomorrow - Themes

Humanity is small:
With widespread death throughout the film, humanity is seen as insignificant from nature’s point of view. It does not matter who you are or what you have done, but if you happen to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, you will die at the will of nature.
The Earth will strike back:
After years and years of disrespect from millions of people, the Earth took revenge. This is a common them in many ecohorror films, as the roles reverse, turning humanity into the victim. In this film, the Earth struck back in the form of violent storms and natural disasters across the globe.
Lack of governmental response to climate change:
It is the government’s actions in not valuing the environment in its policies that eventually caused the events in this movie. It is also the government’s fault in not acting quicker in evacuating people and listening to people like Jack Hall. In both circumstances, it is the fault of the government for the death of millions of people.
