"The Day After Tomorrow" - Themes

The Day After Tomorrow incorporates several themes including:With widespread death throughout the film, humanity is seen as insignificant from nature’s point of view. It does not matter who you are or what you have done, but if you happen to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, you will die at the will of nature. The storms were massive and inescapable, and they had the power to destroy everything in its path, including the creations and the lives of millions. After years and years of disrespect from millions of people, the Earth took revenge. This is a common them in many ecohorror films, as the roles reverse, turning humanity into the victim. In this film, the Earth struck back in the form of violent storms and natural disasters across the globe. For example, tornadoes struck Las Angeles, massive hail rained from the skies in Tokyo, New York was plagued with floods, and most of the northern hemisphere reached violently cold temperatures. All of this showcases just a few of the ways the Earth can wipe out humanity for its wrongdoings. It is the government’s actions in not valuing the environment in its policies that eventually caused the events in this movie. It is also the government’s fault in not acting quicker in evacuating people and listening to people like Jack Hall. In both circumstances, it is the fault of the government for the death of millions of people and the film is demonstrating that it is important that people of power take serious environmental precautions in order to protect the future of humanity.
