Demonstrating the importance of space in his 1969 piece I Am Sitting in a Room, Alvin Lucier manipulated the sound of his own speaking voice, re-recording it over and over again until only the aural resonances of the room was left.
Space dramatically shapes the experience of sound. The movie palaces of the 20s and 30s helped to cohere the addition of sound into the cinema-viewing experience. The cinema thus became an institutional and social space which both influenced and mimicked onscreen depictions and representations of space.
