OSC Faculty Reactions

Students were not the only ones affected by President Strand's actions in dismissing the two professors. The faculty of OSC had something to say about it as well. In this gallery, and in the proceeding paths, you'll find letters from the Physical Education for Women Department, as well as a few from the Department of Chemistry.

A few of these letters reference Dr. Linus Pauling's support of Ralph Spitzer, which we've already covered in this chapter, accessible here, under the title "Linus Pauling and the Europe Fiasco." Christensen | AFFILIATION: Acting Chair, Department of Chemistry at OSC | LOCATION: Corvallis, OR | ADDRESSED TO: Linus Pauling | CONTENTS: In a follow up from a previous letter he sent to Pauling regarding his support for Strand’s dismissal of Spitzer, Christensen expresses his surprise that Pauling is unfamiliar with the problems with staff had with Spitzer as he believed that Gilbert had on three occasions and Friedman on one occasion had spoken to Pauling about this. He refuses to explain why he dislikes Spitzer to Pauling.
WRITER: Ralph Spitzer | AFFILIATION: Department of Chemistry | LOCATION: Corvallis, OR | ADDRESSED TO: Linus Pauling | CONTENTS: Spitzer questions the argument that he was fired for the protection of the department and he reports he heard that people within the Department of Chemistry were opposed to his dismissal, but were coerced into changing their stance. He asks Pauling to inquire into the matter of his dismissal further and investigate what the “real problems concerning Ralph” were. Spitzer also informs Pauling that in a speech made to the Eugene Rotary Club, Strand accused him and LaVallee of trying to destroy the state.
