American Chemical Society

The American Chemical Society is a scientific society, which is a leading source of scientific information around the United States. Their scholarly journal and national conferences make them a leader in the field of scientific inquiry. At the time of Ralph Spitzer's dismissal, Dr. Linus Pauling was the president of the ACS. Though Dr. Pauling supported Spitzer on a personal level, he was unable to back him professionally.

The letter titled "Strand Insults ACS" in in reference to President Strand's response to a letter Dr. Pauling sent him on behalf of Spitzer. Dr. Pauling's letter (in two parts) can be found here and here, and President Strand's reply can be found here (housed on the "Linus Pauling and the Europe Fiasco" page). Or if you prefer, you can view a newspaper clipping which printed them side by side, along with an editor's note, found here (housed on the "Local Reactions to the Dismissals" page).
