He refuses to explain why he dislikes Spitzer to Pauling.

Spitzer Questions Faculty's Reaction WRITER: Ralph Spitzer | AFFILIATION: Department of Chemistry | LOCATION: Corvallis, OR | ADDRESSED TO: Linus Pauling | CONTENTS: Spitzer questions the argument that he was fired for the protection of the department and he reports he heard that people within the Department of Chemistry were opposed to his dismissal, but were coerced into changing their stance. He asks Pauling to inquire into the matter of his dismissal further and investigate what the “real problems concerning Ralph” were. Spitzer also informs Pauling that in a speech made to the Eugene Rotary Club, Strand accused him and LaVallee of trying to destroy the state.
