He refuses to explain why he dislikes Spitzer to Pauling.

He asks Pauling to inquire into the matter of his dismissal further and investigate what the “real problems concerning Ralph” were. Spitzer also informs Pauling that in a speech made to the Eugene Rotary Club, Strand accused him and LaVallee of trying to destroy the state.
