Subway Lines: Experiencing the City

In contrast to the Ring Roads this more experiential path follows the Subway Lines. These are more drawn from the lived experience of being in Beijing. Of being a person inhabiting a particular space, one of many. Because the subway is full of people and now goes everywhere in the city, the subway is the representative form of transport (along with buses, but those are harder to route quantify). Beijing's subway is still cheap, only 2rmb (less than .50cents) and now goes to all four corners of the Beijing district. Here is an image of the current Beijing Subway system, massively expanded in the past decade.

In 2005 there were only three completed lines, which the following paths follow. The East-West straight original Line I, the circular Line II that followed the contours of the old city walls, and Line 13 that went north into the northern suburbs before looping back down to the other end of Line Two (from Xizhimen to Dongzhimen).

Hence, in the following paths, each subway line will take you on a different journey through the city.

Line I is a list of key places, with some images and writing on each. . . it is journey through Beijing's key sights.

Line II looks at different places in the past and present. . .

Because this Line 13 traverses different spaces, including places where migrant people would live, it holds the migration experiences.

As with the real subway in Beijing: construction is still in progress
