Beijing is a city of migration. . . any city would be that has added millions of people in the last century. From 1953, four years after the founding of the PRC, until 2010 the population of Beijing went from 2 million to 20 million. The vast majority of these are Chinese, who have come to Beijing for a variety of reasons. Some for work, or with the government. Many for education, who end up staying. Or as part of China's incredible rural to urban transition, transforming the city their presence and labor. 

There are foreigners too, both students and workers of all levels (from managerial to teacher). . . coming to Beijing to find fortune or diversion. 

Beijing migrates outward into the world's consciousness as well, through its growing cultural production.
