She was the daughter of a printer, Alcalaíno Bernardo Calderón (c.1600-1640). After Calderón's death, his widow, Paula de Benavides, printed approximately 448 titles. Maria was one of Alcalaíno's and Paula's six children, who continued running the business and became among the most important printers in Spanish America. María married a family friend, Juan de Rivera, himself the son of printer-bookseller Diego de Rivera and his wife Juana Venegas. Upon their marriage, Paula made Juan a partner in the business. After Juan's death, María continued running the shop.
