The camera

The camera in the image is a physical representation of a larger idea, the romanticism of “retro”; of the comeback of old fashion looks, and technologies in today’s fashion. This camera embodies our desire to look at today’s world from a literal, different lens (as evidenced by the perpetuating of sepia tones, black and white tones and old fashioned photography shown in the collection surrounding this shirt).

This camera allows us to observe the past differently, in a similar way as the alluded movie allowed 2001 viewers to watch the world of 1975 through a contemporary lens; the main character of the film.  In this film an outsider to the rock scene William Miller follows the band Stillwater in order to write an article about them. In the same way he doesn’t belong to the band or their entourage, we as viewers do not belong to that time period but the alterity that would otherwise be palpable is annihilated through the use of the camera, both Will’s and the movie’s.
