Proposal: Chronological Questions
To me, "The Clock" is a meditation on the constructive nature of time. Thus, it is simultaneously an explication of how humans create time and a defense of that construct against machines. Exploration of this hypothesis will revolve around 3 sections.
In the first section, I will explore the role of film in creating time. Specifically, how important time is to the narrative component of many selected clips and how film is simultaneously a protector and enemy of time.
The second section will move into Marclay's specific choices of clips and their arrangement. Specifically, I will look at how he manages to use human chronological associations to create a narrative while remaining true to time. This will be the exploration of the artistic elements of the work, including how sound is used.
Finally, I will explore how the production choices are related to time. Specifically, his choice of exhibition and the specific rules over how the piece will be shown. These choices seem to be an effort to protect time from the forces of annihilation and to preserve its social nature.
Throughout these three sections, I will include references to other critics work. A conclusion will also wrap them together into a cohesive response to the question presented: how does "The Clock" hold time?
