Moyshe-Leyb Halpern: In a Corner Somewhere

Fun a vinkl ergets - From a Nook Somewhere
Appeared in Pasifik no. 1 (March, 1929): 13.
Translated by Dr. Julian Levinson.

And if you should find yourself alone, sunken in sorrow,
On a ruined ship heading under,

And if you should find the heavens are merely clouds, wind and smoke,
Without support for hands that wish to climb;

Would you shun the planks that carry you along
Just because the ocean is a wilderness leading nowhere?

And if you should see an island, rising before your eyes,
And a bird in the skies, returning to the shore…

And what if you feel a fly alighting on your head –
What could it possibly do for you, as you sink down?

But what if these depths are merely imaginary,
A figment you’ve dreamed to console yourself?

A child can still be pretty -- though weeping on wet ground
As the step-mother beckons, hands as if gripping a sword.

But can you honestly say that beauty resides
In old age weeping in waterlogged children’s britches?

And now you’re acting the fool, your eyes shut tight,
Seated alone in an empty corner –

Are you a sword turning against yourself
To show the world your desolation as you expire?

What could be bleaker than being condemned
To dress yourself in your own death shroud –

An alien like a lone strand of wild hair
Lifting the body, shouting a complaint at this reality?
