H. Goldovsky: Our Street (Part 3)

Undzer gas - Our Street
From Pasifik no. 2 (June, 1929): 22-26.
Translated by Hershl Hartman.

Around Green-Covered Tables (Arumtishlakh-grin)

Oy, not only Pharoah of Egypt slaughtered little children
And not only Pharoah of Egypt bathes in tubs filled with blood:
Whoever is well-sated grows more sated through another’s hunger,
And another’s tragedy leaves him feeling good.

Houses grow festive and fat old dames play
Around green-covered tables at poker and bridge.
“We are the caretakers of the orphaned, the sick,”
Spews with hysterical laughter from each ample cleavage.

Hot young hearts are ground to dust in cities,
Far-off in cities lives are ground-up at machines.
So they are brought to fine houses, where fat old dames laughingly screech,
For dessert after rich meals around the tables, green.

Shalom
Black frock-coats and well-pressed shirts
Have replaced, through bank-books, the red shirts of old.
Stars of David gleam in silken ties,
“Zion” shines on rings that are strange and cold.

Assyrian-lettered books lie abandoned in garages,
Associating quietly with cockroaches and mites.
But, from her Hebrew school is brought “sha-lom”
By the littlest girl, dressed in blue and white.

The Redeemer (Der goyel)

His blue eyes come from far-off Ukraine,
He’s been good friends with Negroes and Chinese,
Building structures and heavy “armoires,”
And in wild prairies, ripping up grasses amid the bees.

New “overalls” for festivities — holiday clothes.
And by unease and joy his heart is stung.
On “Main Street” heaps of tawdry clothes in stores, by rows,
So there’s shame in every language and mockery on every tongue.

Here he is with his strong hands, all the way from the Ukraine,
And he doesn’t lie on rags, but on a crowbar and a spade.
His joyful eyes rejoice and show off their bright flame —
He will rid the world of every rag-store that it’s made.

Our Street (Undzer gas)

The world beats its chest with hammers
Fires bullets as though unplanned—
Bloody battles
In India, in Poland.

Blood flows through pipelines,
Pours as the heart is shed —
whether at the Sea of Black
Or at the Sea of Red.

So the world cries out in pain,
While its joy it utters —
Every message raps upon
Our closed-up shutters.

So our street awakes a’trembling
It shouts, it curses, laughs unfurled.
We, world, are your conscience,
We, your pulse, O world!
