Interdisciplinary Learning: Linear Reading & Hyperreading

Not only the learning material, but the learning itself should be interdisciplinary.

Katherine Hayles concludes that both Linear Reading and Hyperreading are important for learning (Hayles, 2010).

Linear Reading: Traditional forms of reading
- Transfer to long-term memory happens more efficiently.
- Literacy strengthens the anterior insula, adjacent to Broca's area (a part of the brain associated with language use).

Hyperreading: reader-directed, screen-based, computer-assisted reading
i.e. Google searches and keyword filtering
- Increases the cognitive load on working memory.
- Enables one to quickly capture the essence of the data.
