Since the beginning, The Free Range Musician has aimed and succeeded at becoming a resource that provides a look into the life of college music students and professional musicians in Los Angeles and beyond. This is exactly what we have done, but this time we took it a step further.
We have brought on 4 more artists to expand this idea called “TFRM Artists”. Princess, Lucca, Semaj, and Madison will show a look into their lives as they embark on their journeys into Los Angeles. Princess is a charismatic, fun-loving person continuing her career in dramatic arts that
includes the triple threat of dancing, singing and acting. Lucca is ready to put his innovative ideas on screen and share with our audience on how to make a new spin in our world of music. Semaj is brand new to town and is excited to document his next 4 years in Los Angeles covering
topics such as mental health, moving to a new city, and his career aspirations! Madison is one of the hardest working people in town. She helped start the Chromatic Brass Collective, interns with the learning department of the LA Philharmonic, as well as studying horn performance at UCLA!
Sophie and I have worked behind the scenes with the planning, editing, and the posting of each video released this semester. Everyone’s first video still has not been released yet (including my own videos for the rollout), but they will be soon. We aim to have at least one video edited and released every 10 days and have succeeded in doing so.
Sophie Barnard
As a driven musician and aspiring music supervisor, Sophie Barnard is always seeking new musical avenues and projects to explore. Whether through collaborative music video projects, virtuosic performances as a soloist or in chamber groups, or educational endeavors, Sophie seeks to synthesize the worlds of musical innovation and industry knowledge to communicate new ideas and promote social change.
Sophie was born in Detroit, Michigan and began her horn studies in Tucson, Arizona under Carolyn Sturm of the Frankfurt Opera. Today, she continues in Los Angeles under the tutelage of Julie Landsman and Dr. Kristy Morrell at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music.
As a member of the Trojan Marching Band, Thornton Symphony, and her brass quintet, Weapons of Brass Destruction, she takes on numerous virtual and in-person performance opportunities in churches, retirement homes, LA Braille Institute, recordings for local hospitalized COVID-19 patients, and more.
Sophie is venturing toward a career in sync, music licensing, and music rights. She currently holds a position as a Music Rights Intern at Studio71, where she is learning about and applying music copyright and the management of YouTube content rights at scale. She is honing her knowledge of copyright and the creative synchronization process through her studies at USC and by preparing to pursue a degree in Entertainment Law.
In her free time, Sophie serves as a coxswain for the USC Men’s Rowing Team, where she spends time on the water in the mornings and maintains a workout routine with her teammates. She enjoys hiking, running, and spending time in the natural beauty of her hometown of Tucson, Arizona and skiing in Lake Tahoe, California.
Errol Rhoden III
Errol Rhoden is currently based in Los Angeles where he holds the Helgard Field Tuba Chair of the American Youth Symphony. He is pursuing a B.M in Tuba Performance with a minor in Pop Music History Studies from the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music where he studies with Norm Pearson, Jim Self, and Doug Tornquist. He has never been limited to classical music as he enjoys playing pop, jazz, hip-hop, and r&b music all the time!
He grew up in Fayetteville, GA where he was a fellow of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s Talent Development Program where he studied with Atlanta Symphony Principal Tubist, Michael Moore. Throughout his career, he has performed in numerous places around the country including the Hollywood Bowl, Ozawa Hall, the Whittington-Pfohl Auditorium, and even Main Street U.S.A at the Disneyland Resort where he was a member of the Disneyland All-American College Band. He has worked and performed with artists such as Wayne Bergeron, Phillip Bailey, and the Boston Brass just to name a few! Errol has played under the baton of H. Robert Reynolds, Keith Lockhart, Myra Rhoden, and Robert Spano and enjoyed every moment. He has received many accolades during his career including being awarded the Silver Medalist at the Leonard Falcone International Euphonium and Tuba Festival Tuba Student Division.
Errol loves bringing the joy and excitement of music to his family and friends everyday. This keeps him curious and wanting to learn. When Errol is not playing his tuba, he will often be seen playing NBA2k on his Xbox or arguing with friends as to why Lebron James is the greatest basketball player of all time.
