Watershed

Rogue River Watershed

What are Watersheds?
The Rogue River flows through the counties of Jackson, Josephine, Curry, Douglas, and Klamath in southwest Oregon, draining 5,156 square miles of land. It is characterized by a Mediterranean climate and steep rugged slopes which support mostly temperate coniferous forests. U.S. National Forests under the jurisdiction of the Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and Bureau of Reclamation cover over 80% of the basin. City, county, state, and federal governments, though, all share jurisdiction for different parts of the watershed. The Rogue River contains some of the highest quality salmon habitat in the west which provides food for fishing birds, medium to large terrestrial mammals, and people. Currently, the watershed's average population density is about 32 people per square mile (Crown et al, 2008).
