Little Applegate River Watershed

What are Watersheds?
The Little Applegate River was named for Lindsay Applegate, a pioneer who sought a safer alternative route to the Oregon Trail in 1848. Little Applegate River makes up 15% of the larger Applegate River Watershed, 2% of the Rogue River Watershed, and drains approximately 113 square miles of land in the Rogue River Basin. It is characterized by a Mediterranean climate and ancient metamorphic rocks. These conditions support the growth of mixed hardwood and conifer forests which are highly susceptible to wildfire, and home to threatened species like Gentner’s fritillary and the northern brown-spotted owl. Little Applegate River supports populations of cold water migrant fish. However, those populations have been declining due to damming activities. About 75% of the land is federally owned and managed, and 96% is covered by forests (BLM, 1996). [Special Collections: Government Documents: I 53.2:Ap 6x]
