Bear Creek Watershed

What are Watersheds?
Bear Creek flows through the cities of Ashland, Talent, Phoenix, Medford, and Central Point in Southwest Oregon draining 400 square miles of land in the Rogue Valley. It stems from its headwaters at the base of the Siskiyou Mountains in Emigrant Lake and flows northwest, emptying into the Rogue River. It is surrounded by steep slopes and canyons composed of ancient bedrock and nutrient-rich soils which support hardwood and riparian forests. Salmonids such as Chinook, Coho, and Steelhead Salmon rely on the watershed’s cold water temperatures in order to survive and spawn. Salmon also provide food for wildlife, recreation, and education opportunities for communities (Bear Creek Watershed Council, 2001).  Special Collections: Government Publications: OR G/W31 .2B42x.
