Unit 4, Lesson 4: How Did Mexican Americans Build a Community in Bryn Mawr?

The Beginnings of the Citrus Industry

Anson Van Leuven, one of the early Mormon settlers in the San Bernardino Valley, planted the first orange tree in the valley. Soon others caught on and realized that Bryn Mawr was the perfect place to grow oranges. Many businessmen began to plant orange groves and hire workers to pick the oranges and pack them into crates. The Southern Pacific Railroad would be used to transport the oranges across the country.

Question 1: Why do you think Anson Van Leuven would choose Bryn Mawr as his home?
