To Pimp a Butterfly

Institutional Racism

Kendrick Lamar frequently refers to institutional racism in this album. He nuances his references to show how black men, rich and poor, are negatively affected by the government’s influence.

Institutionalized discusses how black men that struggle economically could feel seeing others, especially celebrities, live lavishly. Hood Politics discusses how the government is hypocritical for criminalizing gangs when they both operate similarly. And Wesley’s Theory overviews Lamar’s feelings towards the music industry and refers, through the name, to how the government punishes rich black men harshly with jail punishment.
