To Pimp a Butterfly

Black self-esteem

Another prevailing theme Lamar overviews in Black self-esteem. He breaks down this large topic to expose his feelings of survivor’s guilt, while also discussing complexion and race issues within the Black community.

In the song u, Lamar expresses his inner depressive thoughts and success pressures that he places on himself. Lamar uses the song Complexion to remind people, especially Black people, to love one another regardless of skin color. The Blacker The Berry is where Lamar, and the feature Assassin, display frustration to the government for oppressing Black Americans for so long.
