Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

COFFEE CULTURE
Coffee, primarily just a hot drink brewed from roasted coffee beans has now emerged to be a concept with the blooming coffee culture. Coffee culture or café culture is defined to be a lifestyle which is characterized by regular socializing in cafés. It seems to be evolving from mere food joints to a social setting extended beyond the purpose of personal meetings.
The origin of café culture is dated back to 14th century in Europe. It is basically a western practice which has taken into Indian culture in recent years. Ours is a country which has moved from chai to latte. Many Indian cities have adopted café culture as a lifestyle due to the increasing coffee chains, making India the 6th largest coffee producer in the world. These coffee houses serve as centers of social interaction where social members congregate, talk, write, read, be entertained or simply even pass time. It also serves as an informal club for its regular members.

From the second half of 20th century, many countries are dealing with the term quality of life. It has taken an important place in today’s world and is being incorporated into various speeches and strategies. The term quality of life is an indicator of wealth, employment, environment, physical, mental health, education, recreation, leisure time and social belonging. It assesses the general well-being of individuals and societies.
WHO (World Health Organization) has defined quality of life as, “An individual’s perceptions of their position of life in the context of the culture and value systems in which they live and in relation to their goals, expectations, standard and concerns”. This definition manifests the assumption that quality of life refers to a subjective evaluation that is embedded in a cultural, social and environmental context.
Café culture acts as a driving force leading to development in various domains of quality of life. People who frequently visit cafés are more likely to have a greater holistic development. This in turn is resulting in the development and progress of the society as a whole. Therefore, it can be observed that cafés are playing a pivotal role in enhancing one’s quality of life.CONNECTION
Although, coffee has been a prominent topic of research, much research has not been administered on the thriving café culture. When it comes to the consumption of coffee as a drink, various research studies have pointed out the controversies over its possible impact on health, social order and individual well-being. Among the various researches cafés being regarded as places of leisure, have shown to improve the quality of life of the residents.
