The Split Bean: Cafe experience redefined

Details of the study

METHODOLOGY

SAMPLE

The sampling method used for this research is purposive sampling. As evident, this technique of sampling will include administering the questionnaires to a targeted population. In this research the targeted population includes the people who visit café’s. The factors included are Purpose of visit and Frequency of visit. The factors excluded are age, gender, occupation Socio-economic status. The sample size is 100 which is divided among two groups. Group 1 consists of less frequent visitors i.e. 1-3 times in a week and Group 2 consists of more frequent visitors i.e. 4 or more times in a week.

TOOLS

The questionnaire used for the survey is WHOQOL-BREF which is an abbreviated generic Quality of Life Scale developed through the World Health Organization. The Constitution of the World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as "A state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being not merely the absence of disease . . .". The important aspects of quality of life and ways of asking about quality of life were drafted on the basis of statements made by patients with a range of diseases, by well people and by health professionals in a variety of cultures. The instrument was rigorously tested to assess its validity and reliability in each of the field centres and is from different populations and countries to be compared.

The WHOQOL-BREF is a 26-item, self-administered, generic questionnaire that is a short version of the WHOQOL-100 scale. The response options range from 1 (very dissatisfied/very poor) to 5 (very satisfied/very good). Assessments are made over the preceding two weeks. It consists of domains and facets (or sub-domains). The items on “overall rating of QOL” (OQOL) and subjective satisfaction with health constitute the general facet on OQOL and health. The more popular model for interpreting the scores has four domains, namely, physical health (seven items), psychological health (six items), social relations (three items) and environment (eight items). Our analysis was based on this model. The domain scores of the WHOQOL-BREF can be computed in three ways. The first is a summation of the raw scores of the constituent items. The second and third ways consist of transforming the raw scores. In the second way, the raw scores are transformed into scores that range from 4-20, to be in line with the WHOQL-100 Instrument. The third way converts the 4-20 scores onto a 0-100% scale.

The WHOQOL instruments can be used in particular cultural settings, but at the same time results are comparable across cultures. The core WHOQOL instruments can assess quality of life in a variety of situations and population groups. The WHOQOL instruments are available in over 20 different languages. The method used to develop the WHOQOL involved considerable research and checking over several years to ensure that it accurately measures the issues that are important to a person's quality of life, and that it does so reliably. The WHOQOL-BREF is usually used in medical practices, in improvising patient doctor relationship, in research, in policy making and etc.

STATISTICAL TECHNIQUES

The statistical techniques include tools used to analyse the data collected. As the research to be conducted is quantitative in nature, it makes use of  data analysis software called SPSS (Statistical package for the social sciences). The mean and standard deviation of the population is examined. To conduct a quantitative analysis, we used of coding process after the required data is collected.  The graphical representation is done through a bar graph.

ETHICAL GUIDELINES

The ethical guidelines that we have taken care of while doing the research are:
The consent of the research participants has been asked prior to the administration of the questionnaires. The ethical implications and psychological consequences for the participants in this research have been considered. The essential principles in the investigations have been considered from the standpoint of all participants, foreseeable threats to their psychological well-being health, cause or dignity has been eliminated. The questions that have been designed are not offensive at any degree. The participants have been briefed of the objectives and all aspects of the investigation. The responses of the research participants will remain confidential, only to the knowledge of the administrators. We have taken the primary responsibility of protecting the subjects from physical and mental harm during the investigation. Hence, these ethical measures have been taken while conducting the research.
