- The other class, I mean Mr. Garrison & his
- followers, also had their hobby which was
- succession; which they called the cornerstone
- of true antislavery. This class was very
- small compared with the other for
- there were not a great many people
- who had any faith in Mr. Garrison’s
- method of casting out a devil by split-
- ting the patient in two lengthwise, for one
- reason, because the devil would live
- for another, because the patient would
- die. So Mr. Garrison said Kansas would
- never be free except through northern
- succession. Even if we could make it
- a free state it would be a great injury
- to their antislavery because it would quiet
- the northern conscience. Col. J.W. Higgin
- son (then rev.) was preaching in Worcester.
- In one of his sermons (printed in full in
- the Liberator) he said, “what is the use
- in making Kansas a free state when she
- will be only another Massachusetts?”
- Mr. May said in one of the antislavery
- conventions, “This movement to save
- Kansas is false in principle. We can
- take no part in it. The Liberator was
- always open to any party who wished to
