Categorical or Topical Data Visualizations

Sometimes inquiry in social studies involves making comparisons, observing relationships, or noticing patterns at a particular time or in a specific setting, rather than over time and space. Why do more people live in one region of the country than others? Why is military spending such a large fraction of the federal budget? When this is the case, it is often helpful to use categorical or topical data visualizations. These types of data visualizations are more focused on helping us answer what or how questions, rather than where or when questions. These types of data visualizations usually fulfill one or more of the following functions.
