Sexual Assault Prevention at the University of Michigan

SAPAC Posters

In the decade of 1990, SAPAC produced this collection of promotional materials to publicize their prevention educational activities on campus. Posters, brochures, handouts and bookmarks served to announce multiple events such as the Acquaintance Rape Prevention and Awareness Workshops, Peer Education Programs, and special activities centered around the Sexual Assault Awareness Week and the Rape Prevention Month.

These materials demonstrate how SAPAC creatively approached University of Michigan students to attend its prevention and awareness activities. They also illustrate the forms in which SAPAC expanded its understanding about sexual assault and sexual harassment through transformations across time in the language used in this publicity.

Note: I wanted to provide an example of how the language of inclusion moved from women centered prevention attitude to include same sex forms of violence to locate this problem in native americans or black communities of students on campus but thought that this might be too “intrusive” for our part as archivists. I would like to know what you guys think.
