Sexual Assault Prevention at the University of Michigan

Sexual Assault Prevention at the University of Michigan

This is an online archive of materials representative of sexual assault prevention campaigns at the University of Michigan during the 1990s. The collection is based on archival research from the Bentley Historical Library, and focuses on promotional and educational materials by the University of Michigan’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center (SAPAC). The collection includes posters for sexual assault prevention week as well as educational programs for student athletes.

These materials provide different perspectives of SAPAC’s prevention campaigns. For example, while volunteer training manuals contained within this archive illustrate the ways in which students learned to speak about sexual assault prevention and similar topics to their peers, workshops evaluations offer insight into student athlete perceptions about SAPAC educational materials. Posters and other pedagogical ephemera provide a general overview of the communicational strategies SAPAC used to educate the students and raise awareness. Through these materials, it is possible to examine how these various efforts expanded the discourse of sexual assault prevention and how it affected not only women, but the entire student body as well racial and nonheteronormative groups in the Ann Arbor area.

To interact with this archive, follow the path below by selecting “Begin with SAPAC Posters”. From there, this archive will guide you through select documents from the Bentley SAPAC records organized loosely based on provenance and folder location of the materials. These include: SAPAC posters, student survey responses about sexual assault prevention workshops for athletes, manuals for teaching student groups about sexual assault, and training manuals for new SAPAC volunteers. Please note this list is not exhaustive and only includes a portion and select documents from SAPAC materials.
