Sexual Assault Prevention at the University of Michigan

Volunteer Training Manuals

University of Michigan student volunteers for SAPAC received training prior to working for the program. Training manuals were used to educate new volunteers over the course of several workshop sessions and provide information on sexual assault awareness and how to interact with sexual assault survivors. These manuals provide important insight into the educational goals of SAPAC and what they wanted their volunteers, and by extension, the entire student body, to learn about sexual assault prevention.

The training manual packets focus on defining sexual assault, dispelling myths, and providing resources for survivors. The first set of documents in the following collection are from 1988. These documents are outside the bounds of the scope of this archive (which focuses on the 1990s), but are included to provide a baseline to understand the materials volunteers were given at the start of the 1990s. The workshops in this packet defined types of force and consent, explored power dynamics within relationships that could lead to sexual assault, and addressed how to avoid situations where this type of violence might occur, among other related topics. In 1990, the training manual was greatly expanded and added several pages about misconceptions about sexual assault among people of color and sexual assault in homosexual relationships. This shift is a marked difference from the earlier version, which is why both are included.

Several conclusions can be drawn by a close reading of the documents. The language employed and scenarios utilized are especially notable; in most cases, sexual assault is described as a violent, nonconsensual sexual action from a male to a female. There is a section about sexual violence against men, but most descriptions feature a heteronormative male to female dynamic. Further analysis is needed to understand these implications and how these pedagogical materials were received by students.

The volunteer manuals are not reproduced here in full. These records are organized based on original provenance from how they were found in the folder, but not all documents were included. For example, one folder may include an entire manual, but only select files were scanned and uploaded based on an evaluation of their utilization for researchers and general users.
