Rhizome Experiment, Fall 2015

Composition/Significance of Social Forces

The significance of social forces cannot be underestimated. Without social forces, our entire project would not exist. Social forces give life and meaning to all of the theory, ideologies, and tangible examples put forth in our classes rhizome experiment. The video on the homepage is a great illustration of this. The murmuration can only occur because each individual bird makes its own decisions on how to fly with and interact with all of the other birds. This individual thinking turns into collective socialization. The birds must communicate with each other to make sure they don't fly into each other or fly so far away from each other that the murmuration dissipates. Similarly, the social forces in our project are the individual decisions each class member made on what to write about and how to write it. The collective socialization occurs when each class member chooses how to link to other peoples work. Much like the birds, if people write on content too far away or too close to one another, the project will not work. In essence, the social forces act as the connective tissue between all of the pages in this project, and in the cumulative creation of the content. I will utilize my own social force by linking you too some relevant pages to my discussion above. I am conscious of  some of this utilization, however some of my social forces will manifest itself in ways I cannot account for, much like a rhizome grows out in so many different directions.

Here are some relevant pages. Take particular note of the social forces at work in each example:

- Chloe Lewis's page on Drone Pilots

- Chloe Lewis's page on Full Battle Rattle

- Kayla Mccoy's page on society's view and interaction with the virtual

- Anna Quinn's page on Social Shaping through Nigerian Cinema

Although I believe these pages have particular relevance to social forces, by nature every single page in this project is a product of social forces at work. With such an open ended topic, the key is for you, the reader, to form your own educated view on social forces and why they are so important. For this project, our educated view is a compilation of each individual classmates insights on social forces, whether he or she is conscious of it or not.
