Chronicled Time
One of the striking aspects of the anonymous chronicle, the one on which our study focuses, is the author's use of time. This section analyzes some of the ways that the author constructs his narrative and communicates thoughts through the deployment of temporal language.
To investigate the author's use of time, we constructed a taxonomy with which we categorized references to time, which we have named temporal markers. These temporal markers, combined with the paleographic qualities of the text, helped us to synthesize episodes which represent discreet units of content, usually narrative. Applying these two systems of organization to the text made possible insights about the author's presentation of time. The use of digital tools has made apparent to us concentrations and lacunae, regularities and irregularities of the author's presentation of time.
By making obvious to us the patterns of temporal markers in the text, this approach informed an analysis of the use of time. Ultimately, we have discovered that the author's deployment of temporal markers points at a larger narrative strategy.
