Kulturbund der Deutscher Juden 1933/4

Application for membership in the Kulturbund der Deutscher Juden (Culture league of German Jews, later known as the Jüdischer Kulturbund, Jewish Culture League) from the years 1933/1934. The pamphlet includes a call “to the German Jews" stressing the need for an organization that will continue to provide German Jews access to cultural works after the Gesetz zur Wiederherstellung des Berufsbeamtentums (Law for the Reconstitution of the Civil Service), which deprived many Jews of their occupation in various artistic fields such as theater, orchestras, operas, etc. It conveys the distressing recognition that “countless German Jews today find the paths to the sites of spiritual and artistic elevation and cultivation either directly or indirectly closed to them.” The call continues to emphasize that the “spiritual world of human values that the German classicists have bred” is the object that is being preserved by the Kulturbund deutscher Juden. With performances such as Lessing's Nathan der Weise and Mozart's Cosi fan tutte, which are included in the program for the year 1933/1934, the Kulturbund places the same cultural repertoire that the Nazi regime prided itself with in a different context.
