The International Prester John Project: How A Global Legend Was Created Across Six Centuries

Vincent of Beauvais

Born in France, Vincent of Beauvais (c. 1190-1264) was A Dominican friar and prolific writer responsible for creating the Speculum Maius, a massive encyclopedia in four books compiled between 1240 and 1260. The most widely disseminated of these four books, the Mirror of History, contains a chapter on comtemporary eastern travel narratives, including passages from Simon of St. Quentin's otherwise-lost Historia Tartarorum.
