In 1487, Afonso was chosen along with Pêro da Covilhã by Portugal's King Joao to serve as ambassadors on a mission to find Prester John in Ethiopia. Their route, which took them along the Mediterranean (instead of through the heart of Africa), was recorded in their Report to the Court of King João II.
