View of the Small Waterfalls in Tivoli

Piranesi here depicts a primarily natural scene where there is almost no sign of human interference. Uniquely devoid of any man-made structures, this image suggests his potential skills as a landscape artist of a particularly Romantic bent (Scott 175). Compared with the sketch Robert Adam made from a very similar vantage point, this view of the small waterfall at Tivoli includes dramatic embellishments absent from Adam’s more accurate depiction (Tait 524-5). It shares the general compositional features of the previous view of the large waterfall: in each view, a cliff looms on the left, with a human figure gesturing perilously towards the water, two fishermen appear in the foreground, and the title appears in an illusionistic slab on the lower right. Delicate foliage and curved lines suggest flowing movement rather than a precipitous drop.

The Temple of Jupiter Tonans, located at the foot of the Capitoline Hill, was built by Octavian Augustus by vote and was restored by the Emperor Hadrian after having experienced a fire, along with other buildings located nearby in the Capitoline Hill. From what one observes in this renowned Ruin of the exterior Ambulacrum, as much for the exquisite delicateness and arrangement of the carvings, as for the weightiness and majesty of the Structure, it can rightly be counted among the most notably ornamented buildings ever erected in that glorious century. All this area, memorable in Roman History particularly for the Rostra, from which one would advocate causes to the People, they displayed the heads of those who were killed, or outlawed, for example the bloodied robe of Caesar by Marc Anthony, the head and hand of Cicero, etcetera, and finally, where bloody deeds between Roman Citizens took place. L’on a choisi expres, une telle maniere pour conserver aux colonnes, et a tout le corps du temple leur caractere de majeste, et afin que les corniches ne surchargeassent par les colonnes, et que l’emplacement n’on parut pas trop retreci. C’est ainsi qu’on agit Vitruve dans la disposition de l’interieur de la basilique de Fano liv.6.chap.3 Ces colonnes, nous montrent bien comment les anciens decoroient l’interieur de leurs principaux temples. Les Voyageurs connoisseurs assurent, que par rapport à l'Architecture Greque des Temples bâtis dans l'Ordre Dorique, ceux de Pesto sont supérieurs en beauté à ceux qu'on voit en Sicile et dans la Grèce, et que, sans se donner la peine et la fatigue de longs voyages, ceux-ci peuvent suffire pour contenter la curiosité, et qu'enfin cette grande, et majestueuse Architecture donne en son genre l'idée la plus parfaite de ce bel Art. Les Voyageurs connoisseurs assurent que parapport a l’architecture Grecque des Temples batis dans l’Ordre Dorique ceux de Pesto sont superieurs en beaute a ceux qu’on voit en Sicile et dans la Grece et que sans se donner la peine, et la fatigue de longs voyages, ceux ci peuvent suffire pour contenter la curiosite, et qu’enfin cette grande, et majestueuse Architecture donne en son genre l’idee la plus parfait de ce bel art. Les lettres A B indiquent une de ses facades. Les Antes, ou Pilastres C n’ont point de rastremation. Leurs facades D sont plus grandes que celle en E presque tout a fait ruinee et formee de stuc sur la surface F. Les Chapiteaux G ont des meulures differentes que celles des Colonnes H. Cet usage etoit assez generalement recu chez les Grecs dans ce genre d’architecture, ou ces grandes saillies auroient donne trop de pesanteur au Pilastre, et auroient aussi diminue la gravite des chapiteaux des Colonnes qui forment l’objet principal. Sisteme qui n’etoit pas moins favorable aux parties qui composent cet aspect qu’a l’enceinte des colonnes du Porche, et donnoit a l’ensemble un coup d’oeil suprenant. L’on pensa donc, a supprimer ces sortes des saillies, et a debarasser les abses de colonnes en reservant tout le poid pour les chapiteaux assin de leur donner un air plus majestueux un leur conservant cependant une telle saillie rendue plus legere par la delicatesse de leur ceintures; seuls ornements dessines a relever le grandieux des colonnes. Le pesant architrave I en augmente la majeste sans rien dimineur de la gravite de l’ensemble. L’on a pris ici quelque licence dans l’elargissement des metopes K. Cet Ouvrage montre bien que l’Architecte etoit maitre de son art qu’il n’etoit point retenu par des Systemes imagines capricieusement, ou meme dependants de l’imitation des ouvrages en boisl et en placant les trigliphes L dans un tel lieu, il a fait voir que c’etoit un ornement capricieux qui ne dependoit pas des Loix, ni de principes fondes en raison; mais par les motifs qui ont ete allegues dans la planche X. C’est pourquoi il jugea a propos de les introduire dans la frise sans se croire oblige d’en rendre raison. La Corniche M posee au dessus de l’architrave, et de la frise, qui est d’une mediocre grandeur, est propre a orner toute cette facade, comme l’a bien senti l’artiste en donnant a cette entree un aspect grave et majestueux, ce qui forme le second point de vue de ceux qui entroient. N Restes des couches des Pierre, qui atres fois se joignoient avec celles du Mur ruine, jusqu’aux Antes en O. P deux Ordres des Colonnes interieures qui soutenoient le Comble, aujourd’hui ruine. La facade A est celle qui regardoit la mer, et etoit la principale. Les trois socles B, qui forment tout le bassement le demontrent. Audessus d’eux, etoit appuyee la montee, qui conduisoit au temple. Ces socles C continuent apres dans les cotes du temple, quelque peu ou dela de la moitie, ou ils se changent en un bassement, ou soustruction D pour soutenir le terrain qui regarde la facade de derriere. Les colonnes de ce temple sont moins grandes que celles de celui de Neptune. Il est bati a la dorique, et etoit enduit d’un stuc tres fin. L’on n’auroit pas du dans un tel cas, se servir de pierres moins dures que le travertin, copendant les couches de pierres qui composent la gorge renversee marquee en E etoient d’une pierre semblable au tuf. Cette pierre, qui aujourd’hui tombe en poussiere, fait bien voir qu’elle n’etoit pas propre a resister aux inclemences de l’air. Cela s’etoit fait a la verite pour mettre de la variete dans les marbres, mais cela n’on fit cepedant pas moins une fautel car l’on n’approuvera jamais que l’on substitue une pierre moins dure a une autre plus solide, d’autant plus que chaque partie devoit etre enduite de stuc. Ce membre d’architecture introduit ici, semble contraier l’ordre Dorique, et paroit plus tot produire de l’embaras, que de la legerete. L’on aimeroit mieux un Listeu, quoique d’un usage ancien, qu’une telle nouveaute. La corniche F est tellement ruinee, que l’on n’en peut prendre aucune idee Celle du fasage, ou Fronton G se decouvre en partie; elle a des saillies unies a des lambris. Ouvrage dont il n’est pas possible de rendre raison; le caprice seul ayant dirige l’architecte dans son execution. Il est vraisemblable, que ce n’est pas le meme, qui a construit le temple de Neptune, que l’on a decrit cy devant. Cav. Piranesi F.

Vue de ce qui reste encore des Murs de l’ancienne Ville de Pesto, appellee par les Grecs Possidonia Vue de ce qui reste encore des Murs A de l’ancienne Ville de Pesto, appellee par les Grecs Possidonia. Cette Ville fut anciennement sous la domination des Lucaniens, et ensuite sous celle des Romains. Elle est situee pres de la mer, a 70. milles de Naples. L’on y voit encore de grands Edifices consistans en un Gymnase, ou comme d’autres le supposent ordinairement, une Basilique B avec deux autres Temples C d’un grand stile, et d’ordre Dorique. Ces temples sont situes au milieu des ruines de la Ville. Les murs et les tours qui forment son enceinte, se sont mieux conserves et que ne le paroit ce que nous en representons icy. Strabon Liv. V. de la Geographie dit que cette Ville fut nouvellement batie dans l’endroit ou ces ruines existent encore. De tels monuments font connoitre que l’on avoit des lors une grande connoissance des arts, et qu’ils ne fleuissoient pas moins dans l’Italie, que dans l’Egypte et dans la Grece. Il y a apparence que les facades principales regardoient la mer; quoique la facade du batiment du milieu ne paroisse pas differente de celle qui lui est opposee; mais l’autre facade de l’edifice que l’on suppose etre un Gymnase, ou une Basilique, confirme cette idee par la beaute et la delicatesse du travail de ses chapiteaux, aulieu que celle qui est a la facade opposee, et qui lui ressemble, a pourtant ses chapiteaux moins charges d’ornemens. Le troisieme temple nous met a portee de decider, que le Pronaos, ou la facade regardoit la mer, car c’est de ce cote la qu’on monwit au temple. Nous ne sommes pas assez instruits de Rites et des usages de ce tems la, pour pouvoir en porter un jugement exact. Si un Gymnase devoit avoir une telle disposition, ou bien si un College ou se rassembloient les magistrats devoit etre construit a l’imitation de ceux des Anfictions, peut etre que c’etoit alors l’usage de construire ces sortes d’edifices. Enfin ceux qui iront visiter Pompeia, trouveront, qu’on y a decouvert des ecoles, et des endroits ou les Decurions s’assembloient, ce qu’on n’auroit jamais devine sans les inscriptions qu’on y a trouvees. Avant cette decouverte, nous ignorions leur forme, leur situation, et leur grandeur, et nous ne savions pas que le magistrat se rassemblat dans un demi cercle sur la Voye Appienne. La meme chose, est arrivee au sujet de l’edifice dont nous parlons, et faute de memoires nous ne pouvons pas determiner exactement quelle etoit sa forme, ni a quel usage il etoit destine. Cav. Vue des restes d’une grande enceinte de colonnes Vue des restes d’une grande enceinte de colonnes, formant un quadrilatere, et surmontees d’un architrave qui regne tout au tour, avec d’autres morceaux, qui formoient une partie de la frise A. La pierre dont cet edifice etoit bati ressemble au travertine, et elle etoit enduite d’un latre tres fun, pour en mieux courir les deffauts, et les inegalites. Le diametre des colonnes, est a peu pres de la grandeur d’un hominc ordinaire. Sur la frise, il n’y a pas de trigliphes, mais les stries, et l’entasis, ou renflement des colonnes, avec la variete et la finesse des moulures qui decorent les chapitoux la proportion des hauteurs, et des Saillies, semblent donner a cette architecture un caractere, qui s’approche de l’ordre Dorique. Les trois divers socles B regnent tout au tour de l’enceinte. Ce n’a point ete pour servir de montee, qu’on les a places ici mais pour donner plus de liason, et plus de maieste aux colonnes, et en meme tems pourque cet edifice, qui etoit public fur sitingue des edifices particuliers. Quecique sa montee C soit ruinee, il est pourtant reste des morceaux qui indiquent le lieu ou pasoient ses degres, comme en pareil eas cela se voit aussi a’Pompeia dans les restes d’un ancien temple d’ordre Dorique. L’on ne sait pas a quel usage ce magnifique edifice etoit destinee, les indications, que nous venons de rapporter, ne sont pas sussisantes poour nous eclaireir sur ce point, parce qu’elles appartiennent plustet aux connoissances de l’art. S’il existoit encore quelque partie du comble, ou de la charpente, les idees, que cela nous donneroit de sa forme, pourroient nous aider à former des conjectures sur son usage. L’on verra par apres les parties intericures de cet edifice dessinees plus en grand. Cependant on est surpris du nombre impair des neuf colonnes qui sont de front; mais en observant l’interieur de l’edifice divise en deux parties, et que lestrois colonnes restices en pied, repondent directemente a cello du milieu des deux Pronaos, et a celle du milieu des deux facades, qui y est situee au lieu de l’entrecolonnement. Il paroit evident qu’un tel nombre impair de colonnes dans un edifice public aussi semptu eux n’etoit pas un dissaut; mais une disposition nicessaire. Il ne nous reste plus sucun model de paroils edifices, meme dans les ruines de la Grece, ou de L’Italie. Vitruve dans son traite d’architecture on parlant des ouvrages publics comme Basiliques, Curies, et Temples, dans la disposition de Colonnes sur le front de ces edifices, n’a jamais propose de nombre impair. Il est bien vrai cependant que pour les cotes l’on a employe assez indiferemment les colonnes en nombre pair et en nombre impair. Il faut donc chercher quelqu’autre denomination que celle que nous donne Vitruve. Quelqu’un dira le Pronaos interieur est construit selon que cela se pra tiquoit pour les temples; mais les Pronaos des temples avoient la porte dans le milieu qui condusoit dans la cella, et non pas une Colonne au lieu de porte. Nous ne sommes pas assez instruits des Rites, et des usages de ce temps la pour juger si cet edifice devoit avoir la disposition d’un Gimnase, ou bien d’un College, ou se rassembloient les Magistrats a l’imitation de ceux des Anfictions. L’on voit cependant ici des traits d’une invention, a la quelle on ne s’attendoit pas, et qui malgre leur hardiesse obligent d’avouer, que l’on ne pouvoit pas mieux se conduire en pareil cas. Cav. Title and Description: Interior view of the Pantheon. This temple, built by Marcus Agrippa, is in a round form, the height of which is the same as its diameter. The first order is entirely ancient. The twelve principal columns are of yellow marble, as the two in the Tribunal, which have never been removed from their original position. The architrave and the cornice are made of marble, and the frieze of porphyry. The second order is modern except the cornice of marble, which is ancient, the encrustation of marble, porphyry, yellow, and serpentine [type of dark green marble] that adorned it, were removed by Pope Benedict XIV, because they were in danger of falling down, and were adorned with stucco as one sees presently. The temple of the Goddess Cybele, of which one can still see the remains, is round in form, and it was encircled by a most noble Portico. It was sustained by numerous fluted Columns and their capitals, each one of which is adorned with pinecones, , one of which has the attributes of the Deity to whom the Temple was consecrated. Removed from this portico was a Marble Frieze, and Architrave, and built there was a wall in between a Column, and another which was adapted for the Church dedicated to Santa Maria del Sole. Key: 1. Piranesi F(ecit). Title and Description: Interior view of the Pantheon. This temple, built by M. Agrippa, is in a round form, the height of which is the same as its diameter. The first order is entirely ancient. The twelve principal columns are of yellow marble, as the two in the Tribunal, which have never been removed from their original position. The architrave and the cornice are made of marble, and the frieze of porphyry. The second order is modern except the cornice of marble, which is ancient, the encrustation of marble, porphyry, yellow, and serpentine [type of dark green marble] that adorned it, were removed by Pope Benedict XIV, because they were in danger of falling down, and were adorned with stucco as one sees presently. The high altar is modern, built by Clement XI. The eight minor altars are ancient, as well as the floor composed of yellow marble, granite, and porphyry. Signature: Made by the Knight Piranesi.

From what one observes in this renowned Ruin of the exterior Ambulacrum, as much for the exquisite delicateness and arrangement of the carvings, as for the weightiness and majesty of the Structure, it can rightly be counted among the most notably ornamented buildings ever erected in that glorious century. Title: Interior View of the Villa of Maecenas Key: From the inscription L.OCTAVIVS.L.F.VITVLVS C.RVSTICIVS.C.F.FLAVOS.INTER.III.VIR.D.S.S.VIAM.INTEGENDAM.CVRAVERE., that one reads, affixed in the ancient method on the perpendicular window A, and from what one observes, that the vault that covers the street with the villa, makes one whole structure, we are convinced that the entire building was not a villa, but a building made for the use of the Commune of Tivoli, and to counteract the incline of the hill as one sees from the inscription, that to maintain the street, the cover and vault were ordered by that Senate. Consoli l’uno l’anno di Roma DCXXCI, l’altro l’anno DCCXVII, l’uno di essi forse fece o ristaurò questo tempio. 2 Altro tempio antico, oggi di San Giorgio. Anche questo, per que’ versi di Stazio potrebbe dirsi della Dea Albunea….. illa Tiburnus in umbra, illic Albula. Some have thought that the Temple was of Hercules; but Clüver in Book 3 of Italia Antiqua suggests that it was of Tiburnus because of those words by Statius in Book 1 of the Silvae... illa recubat Tiburnus in umbra; illic sulphureos cupit Albula mergere crines [here Tiburnus lies in this shade; here Albula wishes to wash her sulphurous hair]...on the frieze of this one reads this cut off inscription...F.L.GELLIO.L.F. We have two Lucius Gelliuses, son of Lucius. Both consuls, one in the year of Roma DCXXCI, the other in the year DCCXVII, one of them perhaps built or restored this temple. 2 Another ancient temple, now San Giorgio. Even this temple, for those verses of Statius, one could say that it is of the Goddess Albunea...here Tibur in the shade, here Albula.
