"World map," in Hartmann Schedel, Liber Cronicarum [Nuremberg Chronicle] (Nuremberg, 1492)

The Nuremberg Chronicle is a historically significant encyclopedia that recounts biblical and secular history up to 1492. The three sons of Noah hold the world map, which depicts the three then-known continents: Europe, Asia, and Africa. Heads border the map representing different Greek personifications of winds. This is the only world map in the Nuremberg Chronicle, which also details known cities and depicts a European view of the world prior to the coming age of colonization and expansion. (HP)
