Insect transformation in Suriname, in Maria Sibylla Merian, Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium (Amsterdam, 1705)

Maria Sibylla Merian was an artist known for her travel to the Dutch colony of Suriname in South America and her publication about the insects of that region. Merian created the images for the publication herself, based on her firsthand observations in Suriname. Merian's plates depict not only the flora and fauna but also the various life stages of insects, reflecting the great interest in metamorphosis that naturalists had at the time. (DP)
