Injustice in our Backyards: Oil Pipelines in the Bakken

Just as oil resources in places like Nigeria and Venezuela have brought environmental injustice and racism, the Bakken Shale Oil Formation in North Dakota has yielded similar results. Author Mickie Lynn at Times Union argues that the Dakota Access Pipeline was a case of environmental racism when “the state of North Dakota rejected several other routes for the Dakota Access pipeline and placed it on a route across the Missouri river where it would threaten the water supply of the tribe” (Times Union). With even more pressure from consumers, activists, organizations, and governments, perhaps the environmental injustice occurring in the Bakken and other areas globally can be prevented or reduced.
