Cases of Environmental Justice
Nigeria
Shell ultimately withdrew from Ogoniland due to increased international pressure after the execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa and other MOSOP leaders in 1995. In many ways, however, environmental justice has yet to be served in Nigeria. According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in 2011 comprehensive assessment of Ogoniland, It was found that oil contamination is widespread, and although oil companies no longer operate in Ogoniland, the environment is still affected by oil spills ("Environmental Assessment of Ogoniland"). Much time and effort still has to be taken in Nigeria, and according to Oronto Douglas et al, “Nigeria Suffers all the hallmarks of such petro-violence. Breaking with this bloody history will require a major political commitment on both sides of the Atlantic” (Bullard 254).
