Pennsylvania Anthracite Coal Miners: Self-Representation and Memorialization

Minersville

Coal Miners' Statue and Park

Date Erected: June 28, 1997

Location: Intersection of Routes 209 & 901: Minersville, PA

Description:
The Coal Miners' Statue and Park creates a unique urban space and experience for the onlooker to reflect. There are two benches situated next to two plaques. Altogether, there are three plaques: 1) the funding of the project, 2) a story about the progression from breaker boy to coal miner, a description of anthracite coal, and the importance of coal mining in Schuylkill Country, and 3) the dedication of the statue. The figure of a coal miner is depicted holding a lunch pail, wearing a miner's hat, and a gas lantern. The coal miner's stance seems to illustrate his attempt to use the lantern to guide him through the coal mine.
