ONE Archives at the USC Libraries

ONE Archives at the USC Libraries is the largest repository of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) materials in the world. Founded in 1952, ONE Archives houses millions of archival items including periodicals, books, films, videos, audio recordings, photographs, artworks, organizational records, and personal papers. It is the mission of ONE Archives to collect, preserve, and make accessible LGBTQ historical materials while promoting new scholarship on and public awareness of queer histories.
ONE Archives is unique in that all of its material relates to the LGBTQ+ community.

Featured Collections

Many of ONE Archives' collections contain material similar to other collections in Hidden Histories. The following collections are featured for their institutional crossover, highlighting just some of the connections that can be made within this project.
De Brier (Samson) papers, 1948-1995
Correspondence, notes, photographs, clippings, biographical material, and other personal papers, 1948-1995, from actor, artist, and raconteur Samson de Brier. After working as an actor in the 1910s and 1920s, most notably in the film Salome, the eccentric de Brier remained in Hollywood and literati circles throughout his life and was known for hosting salons with creative locals in his Hollywood home. California Proposition 6 Briggs Initiative collection, 1977-1980
Correspondence, clippings, legislative and legal documents, pamphlets, flyers, photographs, financial records, meeting minutes, event posters, petition forms, memoranda, speakers' manuals, volunteer forms, and other material documenting the campaign to defeat California Proposition 6, introduced by State Senator John Briggs in 1978. The initiative's intent was to require the dismissal of public school teachers and schoolworkers who "engaged in advocating, soliciting, imposing, encouraging or promoting of private or public homosexual acts." Related Collection: Bay Area Coalition Against Briggs Initiative collection, 1978 (UCSB Library)
Cruising (motion picture) collection, 1979-1980
Flyers, clippings, articles, correspondence, article draft, screenplay excerpts, news releases, photographs, production schedule, film publicity, and notes documenting controversy regarding the film Cruising (1980), a crime-drama that elicited opposition from gay and lesbian activists for its portrayal of homosexuality. The collection documents actions directed against the production and release of the film, as well as controversy within the gay and lesbian community over the issue of censorship. Related Collection: Friedkin (William) papers, 1959-1997 (Margaret Herrick Library)
Edelman (Ed) photographs, circa 1974-1994

Humphreys (Laud) papers, 1951-1988
Drafts, correspondence, journal articles, notes, newspaper clippings, surveys, legal documents, memoranda, transcripts, speeches, course curricula, subject files, ephemera, photos, and an audiocassette tape created or collected by sociologist and Episcopalian priest, Laud Humphreys, who is best known for his book, Tearoom Trade: Impersonal Sex in Public Places--the first publication to examine the social and sexual behaviors of men who perform sex acts with other men in public restrooms. The majority of the collection consists of manuscripts, correspondence, lecture material, surveys, journal articles and newspaper clippings relating to Humphreys' career--from his doctoral work in 1968 until his death in 1988--and research in the field of sociology and, more specifically, homosexuality and criminology. The collection also contains personal papers including correspondence, documents and clippings related to his experience as an Episcopalian priest from 1955 to 1965, an altercation with a professor at Washington University in 1968, and his trial and subsequent imprisonment for an antiwar demonstration in Illinois in 1970. Related Collection: Humphreys (Laud) papers, 1969-1980 (Claremont Colleges Special Collections & Archives)

Kirk/Spock Slash Fiction Zine collection, 1978-1986

The Ladder, 1956-1972*
The Daughters of Bilitis was a major force, helping lesbians meet outside of bars, documenting their lives, & promoting civil rights. This was their national newsletter for lesbians. Related Collection: The Ladder: A Lesbian Review collection, 1957-1968 (UCSB Library)
Money (John) papers, 1802-1993
Writings, lectures, course materials, printed materials from research, and miscellaneous items created and collected by psychologist/sexologist Dr. John William Money. The bulk of the collection is a complete carbon-copy set of Money's lectures from his class "Biosocial Aspects of Human Sexuality" at Johns Hopkins University, in fall 1980. The collection also includes a number of Money's early writings; article off-prints; and his "Autobiographical Statement," later re-titled "Explorations in Human Behavior" and published in the second volume of The History of Clinical Psychology in Autobiography (1993), edited by C. Allan R. Ellenberger Collection on Ramon Novarro
Correspondence, drafts, research notes, photographs, audiotaped interviews, newspaper and film magazine clippings, videotapes, and miscellaneous graphic materials produced and collected by Allan R. Ellenberger in the course of researching his biography of film actor and silent screen romantic idol Ramon Novarro (1899-1968), published in 1999 as Ramon Novarro; A Biography of the Silent Film Idol, 1899-1968; With a Filmography. Pucciani (Oreste F.), 1890-1998
This collection contains materials relating primarily to the private life of Oreste Pucciani (1916-1999), UCLA Professor of French and Sartre scholar, documenting in particular his relationship with his long-time lover, Rudi Gernreich, and his close friends, art director Jacques Faure (1926-1986), poet Stanley Kuniholm (1912-1984), and Lionel Mailles (born 1951). The bulk of Pucciani's personal writings consists of erotic short stories written most probably between 1975 and 1980. The bulk of the materials relating to Rudi Gernreich consists of condolence letters to Pucciani after Gernreich's death, together with a small number of cards and letters addressed to Gernreich, letters to Pucciani from Gernreich's mother, and a videocassette recording of a talk given by Pucciani on his late partner in 1993. The bulk of the materials relating to Faure, Kuniholm, and Mailles consists of letters received by Pucciani; however, the Mailles files include copies of letters, poems, and essays addressed by Pucciani to Mailles. The materials received from Kuniholm include a large number of poems, short stories, and essays documenting the poet's creative processes. Rocco (Pat) Photographs and Papers, 1900-2014
Photographs, scripts, programs, and related records documenting Pat Rocco's careers in radio, television, and theater; erotic photography; journalism; provider of emergency shelter for the homeless. Rocco was known for his charity, organizational, and collaborative work on behalf of gay and lesbian community in Southern California, primarily Los Angeles, and later in Hawaii. The bulk of the collection documents Rocco's life from 1970 through 1990. Related Collection: Books and Periodicals (California State Library, California History Section)
Slater (Don)/Homosexual Information Center collection, 1957-1998
Correspondence, membership records, publications, promotional material, clippings, subject files, financial records, and court records of the Homosexual Information Center, 1965-1998. Also includes the personal correspondence, financial records, medical and insurance records, photographs, and memorial service materials of Don Slater, 1957-1997.
