  As a repository situated in East Los Angeles, and at the heart of several diasporic, immigrant communities, Special Collections & Archives moreover aims to capture the diverse lives and historical narratives reflected in our heavily first-generation student body, and the major contributions their communities have made to the dynamic cultures of Southern California.

  Featured Collections

  Dixon (Julian C.) collection

  Julian C. Dixon (1934-2000) served as a California State Assembly Member of the 49th Assembly District, and as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from the 28th and 32nd Congressional Districts. Dixon graduated from California State University, Los Angeles in 1962. The materials in the collection include California Assembly files, press clippings, general office files, press releases, speeches, and photographs.

  Dymally (Mervyn M.) papers

  Mervyn Dymally (1926-2012) served as California State Assemblyman for the 52nd and 53rd District, and as State Senator for the 29th District. Dymally completed a Bachelor of Arts in education at California State University, Los Angeles in 1954. Dymally is known for breaking barriers as a black lawmaker in California and in Congress after moving to the United States from his native Trinidad at age 19. The collection consists of government correspondence, press clippings, press releases, speeches, and photographs.

  Voces del Teatro Oral History Archive

  Voces del Teatro Oral History Archive is an ongoing project that seeks to research, record, preserve, and share oral video/audio histories of key Latinx theatremakers who established and developed Latinx theatre in modern Los Angeles (late 1960s to Present). This project began in 2020, under the sponsorship of Latinx Theatre Alliance/Los Angeles, and in the fall of 2023 LTA/LA partnered with Cal State LA Special Collections and Archives to officially house and preserve the collection. The archive will expand to include other collections that document the Latinx theatre movement in Los Angeles and will be highlighted through public programming and course/primary source instruction.
